It’s spring cleaning time, ideal time to bring yourself some extra cash– o-la!
Our family recently elected to host one as a “learning experience” on the value of money for our sons Devon 8 and Oliver 5. After my boys used their birthday monies to purchase a remote control Lego train set, they quickly wanted to add onto their set. Well, last time I checked the only trees on our property are citrus and not cash! My hubby and I agreed they will need to purge and help price their old toy sets and get to keep 100% of the total sales. Game on! My boys were so excited they turned into purge – o – maniacs and we sold $174!

{Garage Sale Solution}…Purge & Price Anything to Sell!
- Set up (2) six foot tables in your garage to work on. Could also use (2) hearty plastic storage bins and lay a spare door or wooden plank on top. Use solid tablecloths – gives a finished look!
- Grab a handled tray for your Core Work Station – sharp scissors, hole puncher, fresh colored sharpies, clear packing tape, stack of old business cards/index cards for price tags. Twine or ribbon remnants for tying and package of baby wipes for cleaning.
- Ziploc baggie storage for sets with small pieces – quickly gather pieces in a baggie. Hole punch instruction book to easily attach to item. Ex: Lego Set
- For pricing small cars or like kind kitchen or tools– use an old wide mouth food container like for cookies or red vines and put one price tag on the front. Ex: 25 Cents each, or 2 for $1
- Displaying Kid and Adult Clothing – must be hung on giveaway hangers for quick viewing. Tie rope between two trees or use a ladder. Price at a $1. each….keep it simple!
- Displaying Books or Magazines– place in low box so customers can flip to view titles.
- Displaying Jewelry – Use a push pins in board to display or tray with dark fabric over it to make the jewelry pop. Keep at check out table.
- Group “like with like” – on display tables, kid toys, housewares, lawn and garden, sports, clothes etc.
- Pricing Guide – Whatever you do PRICE EVERYTHING! Generally, pricing is 80-90% off its retail value unless it’s brand new or high demand. Try consigning higher-end items first!
- PRICE TO SELL– How do you price…TO SELL! Customer haggling is gravely reduced and your response is simple “Everything is priced to sell!” Many customers can not speak English or are too shy to ask for a lower price so HIGH prices lead to turn off which = NO SALES. How do you price? TO SELL! I didn’t hear you? How do you PRICE? TO SELL!!!!!
