DIY Jewelry + Coat Storage Solution
Here’s how this project even got started…we have this skinny little linen closet right outside our bedroom door. I was never fan of all the wasted space above and below the existing coat rack but made due until I revised a better system and what I would store in there. One day I just decided, you know what, let’s transform this into his and hers coat closet + store my jewelry, making it more functional for us.
“Whatever you decide to use your open space for, make sure to create a system that is easy to use, appealing to the eye and is 100% functional.”
I’ll admit, this project didn’t happen overnight. I chipped away at the concept and adding things over time as life allowed! If you follow my 4-Step Organizing process as taught in my book, Ignite the Organizer in You,
you will make substantial progress faster than you ever thought possible.
Step 1: ASSESS the space and its function:
What types of items would you like to store in the space? For me, it was my outer jackets and for my hubby Phil it was his dressy sport coats. In addition, I desired to store my everyday jewelry on the door so it can be locked and protected while away from home.
Step 2: ATTACK and dissect the items:
I truly believe something must consistently serve a purpose in your current lifestyle in order to be granted the privilege of residency.
Divided all items into appropriate themes: non-negotiables, donate or consign, maybe-pile-of-misfits ™, memory or trash. Once you have gone through the entire inventory than you can revisit the maybe pile with a clear mind until it is eliminated.
What items need removing and/or relocating? I gravely paired down the gift wrap supplies and relocated the ribbons to my craft room. The boys had outgrown the paint and toys supplies so we donated to our local neighborhood Boys and Girls Club
Step 3: ASSIGN a System:
We installed the Elfa Reach-In Closet System up top
for my husband’s sports coats and jackets. Then below are my outerwear and dressier jackets.
In order to capitalize on space and make this closet even more functional, I used the inside of the door as a way to hang long necklaces, which are always getting bundled and tangled.
Am I right!? How many countless hours and unnecessary tears have you spent untangling your favorite statement necklace? Too many! Not any more ladies with this gem…
I used simple command hooks to hand the necklaces, again to make even more use of the space.
This has been a nice little tidy, buy mighty solution for us and we absolutely love it!
Step 4: ACCOUNTABLE to yourself, your family and space:
Yes, there are times when I am dashing in between work and soccer and home again I place my jacket on the kitchen chair, but honestly, the rest are hung up in this nifty closet space along with the necklaces. If you have a heavy week of activities, you can always use Sunday night as a “tidy-up-night before the start of another busy week. Our family is no different from others…life happens, things get out of place, but only takes us all about 15 minutes to put away loose items around the house.
